Bob and Jake continue the series on healing as seen through the life of St. Peter. Identity is the core of who we are and something that God wants to assure and clarify in us. Jesus changes Simon’s name to Peter signifying a deepening of his identity. God sees truly and clearly. He sees who we are meant to be. Our search for identity and validation is most perfectly rooted in our relationship with Him.

Guiding Scripture

“You are Peter and on this Rock I will build my Church.” (Matthew 16:18)

Key Points

  • Simon has his name changed to Peter representing a change in identity

  • Jesus calls Peter into an identity that he can’t yet see in himself

  • We have deep aches to have our identity validated

  • Relationship → Identity → Mission (RIM) or Mission → Identity → Relationship (MIR)

  • Security → Maturity → Purity

  • We grow into our identity through being loved in relationships

  • Jesus knows we are all longing to know who we are

  • When I am turning to God, I am in the best place to receive my identity

  • Everyone is telling us about who they are through their filters and wounds, God doesn’t have those dynamics impacting Him seeing the truth of who we are

  • The question, “Who am I?” is a pearl of a question that we shouldn’t place before swine

  • We can misinterpret actions people do as definitions of who we are

  • God doesn’t have issues that affect his view of us

  • God longs to bestow a deep identity into us that often comes as a name but it doesn’t negate our given name

  • Identity is continually being revealed

  • It’s from a place of security that we can receive correction from the Lord

  • When we are secure we can receive correction for the times we aren’t living from our true identity

Practical Application

  • We deeply ache to have our identity validated. What are some of the healthy and unhealthy places you take those aches?

  • Jesus knows we are all longing to know who we are. Will we let Him answer us?

  • Begin a time of prayer by praising and being grateful to God for all the blessings in your life. Once your heart is connected to God, bring this deepest question to your loving Father: “Abba, who do you say that I am?” If you feel okay to do so, share the name you received with someone you trust.

  • What has God revealed about your true identity lately?
