Guiding Quote

“Our battle is not against flesh and blood but principalities and powers.” - Ephesians 6:12

Key Points

  • Most conflicts in marriage are not resolvable; it’s how we relate to one another during conflict that matters most.

  • Marriage will change you: it’s meant to make you holy.

  • Your enemy is not your spouse, it’s the evil one.

  • Showing one another honour is key in conflict. Grace flows through honor and echoes the marriage vows: “I will love you and honor you all the days of my life.”

  • The biggest sources of conflict are deep seated, such as differences in lifestyle, temperament and religion.

  • Differences in our practices of faith can bring about division rather than unity when we don’t respect our spouse’s freedom and the journey they are on with God.

  • It is important to move beyond gender stereotypes in marriage which do not reflect the realities of many relationships.

  • Healing can happen in conflict when we pause to look at what’s below the surface.

Practical Application

  • This week, write down the following and pray through them: what are you thinking about your spouse, feeling about your spouse, and desiring from your spouse right now?

  • How can you show honour to your spouse instead of trying to change them in an area that may cause tension or conflict?

  • Pray for unity in your marriage, and for the grace to respect the journey that your spouse is on with God.
